GORILLAS AND WILDLIFE WATCHING
Exploring and observing nature is where some of our most memorable moments take place during any trip. Uganda ranks high among the most diverse countries on the African continent. The numbers speak for themselves: 241, 551 Km2 surface area and accounts for 0.18% of the world’s terrestrial and freshwater surface, Uganda harbors 4.6% of the dragonflies, 6.8% of the butterflies, 7.5% of the mammals, and 10.2% of the bird species globally recognized. Uganda has more species of primates than anywhere else on Earth of similar area. Kibale National Park has an area of just 760 Km2 and it has 12 species of primates. Uganda’s bio-diversity in terms of flora and fauna is the result of a unique, varied and extreme geography that has created every climatic zone and habitat imaginable for animals and plants to flourish, in habitats many of which are in their pristine state. With various regions of endemism, such as the Mgahinga and the Bwindi impenetrable forests, home to rare and endemic bird and wildlife species which can only be found here. This is especially true of birds, polypore fungi and primates amongst many other animal and plant groups.
UGANDA’s stunning national park and protected area system is among the most extensive in the world and it’s where we spend most of our time. Working closely with biologists and other nature specialists, we have been able to gain special access to the best sites – some of which are not open to the standard traveler – to see the most interesting and rare species. From birds to reptiles, frogs to mammals, from orchids to butterflies, we cover it all.
Our tours can range from daytime safaris in Bwindi (Impenetrable forest), searching for the legendary Mountain Gorillas, the Big 5, or a night-time trek through the Murchison jungle to seek out nocturnal animals and insects, or bird watching high up on the Elgon, Rwenzori and Gahinga mountain ranges.
